ADS - 3D MODELING
Toyota Yaris
All new Yaris TV commercial in 2016, introducing its latest feature of futuristic looks and great music apparels. Captured and showcased in robotic car action set up in 3D music city where all the buildings, streets and traffic equipments were made from all music related.
This ad was a combination between 3D model design, real-life shoot, green screen and special effect being digitally composited.
Challenges.
This was one of my favorite projects in making 3D environment modeling. It was really challenging and exciting because the details and imagination needed to create the whole music city.
I had a little bit of doubt at first when I was contacted to create the 3D city model due to its complicated and large amounts of building that I need to create, scratch from the concept art to making the matte painting for background render and compositing. But all was done quite smooth, considering the client was awesome as well :D
Roles.
• Concept Art
• 3D Modeling and Texturing
• Matte Painting
Tools.
Autodesk 3Ds Max, Mudbox, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effect, Pencil and Paper.
FINAL ADS VIDEO
Below are the final results of the 'Toyota All New Yaris 2014" that I fortunately got the opportunity to work with awesome and professional client's team "The Cutshop". In this, I was only responsible to create the 3D environment modeling and scene of the Music City, including all its model elements and matte painting.
Concept Art.
The brief was to create a 3D model of music city, with some preferences from client. Hence, I got to come up with a concept and propose them to clients. It was tricky but the good thing was I got the freedom to doodle around and randomly with my hand, sketching through whatever imaginations come to mind :D.

Yaris Client Brief for 3D Environment
It was super exciting, since I could play around with the building shape, material, roads, and so many elements needed to create one whole city. The theme was something modern, futuristic, robotic, dynamic and automated. So I came up with these first few initial rough sketches to get my brain a go, though usually I develop the concept art more in 3Ds max while creating the model.

Concept Art - 3D Building
Work in Progress.
After developing more concept for other building, roads, street lamps, more landmarks, bridges and so on, below are some 3D screenshot from 3Ds Max before texturing. These show the wireframe looks to check out the topology. It was so amusing to figure out how to combine building, objects or landmarks with musical aspect and instruments. I choose the concept for the road from vinyl disc, to emphasize the texture.

3D Wireframes Model in grey matte material
These were some 3D render results for object model in grey with lighting, shadow and ambience oclusion. All of the 3D model here are rendered using Vray Lighting shader and matte grey 3D material.

Rendering 3D Model in grey matte material
Here's some 3D screenshot after the model has been textured and put together with matte painting as background to cover the additional city surroundings. Here you can see the mood was set up for futuristic and neon light feels.

Final Render & Matte Painting.
This was the final render looks from the 3D Model part (my task), which might be different in final results after being composited and edited by the digital compositor or online editor. I usually provide one or two scene rendered after basic lighting and color setup, as a guide for the person responsible for the next step. Then I provided all the 3Ds Max file and texture images for a handover with client's internal team to proceed the next stages.

3D Environment - Rendered Results
The one thing I realized about TVC project with big environment scene was how important 'Matte Painting' is. Being on the background sometimes slightly make it seems not too important because it was additional. However, to fill the gap of empty space in this 3D city model, matte painting was really necessary. The 3D file would be too heavy for rendering if all the elements inside were from polygon.
So I was seriously focused when creating this music city matte painting, since it's as important as other assets.
