BRANDING & IDENTITY 

Warung Kopi

Gembira

Friendly neighborhood stop for breakfast with authentic home-cooked taste of 'kopitiam' food that is still personally made by husband-wife owners for more than 20 years. This project is about bringing vintage hometown taste with modern yet personal touch visual.

OVERVIEW

The objective for this project's application was to re-brand the conventional kopitiam neighborhood restaurant into a modern design application to attract young and new customer, while still uphold the traditional touch that values long-time customer for generations.

Logo Concept.

The thinking process began by analyzing the food, history and hometown where it stand still for more than decades. Other than its taste, personal touch is the core and value of this restaurant.

Well-known for its signature dishes, Hakka Noodle and local Lampung Black Coffee that is freshly brewed using the conventional technique every morning, were the main concept of this logo.

 

Hand-sketch illustrated logo was chosen as it is best portray the personally prepared and home-cooked food by the owners themselves. 

The two dishes side-by-side illustrate how the husband and wife has operated the family business until now.

Branding

Brand Identity.

Located in southern province of Sumatra Island, Indonesia. 'Warung Kopi Gembira' is a long withstanding south-east asian kopitiam eatery where you could find authentic chinese-indonesian foods, providing warmth to your stomach and nostalgic hometown taste to your tongue.

Logo Options.

These are the logo alternatives given to client, and then option number 2 was chosen with some final revision about color palette addition above. 

Illustrations.

Watercolor manual illustration were created as another important design aspect other than food photography. It was done to give more personal touch and handmade feeling to the whole design. As it is the core of this humble eatery.

Food Photography.

Best material for restaurant menu is the ones showing their actual dishes. Hence, food photography was created, since it could show the dishes' looks directly.Photos were taken using Sony NEX 5 and handmade light box. The direction was to take a close up photos so it could best portray their tastiness.

   BRAND COLLATERAL   

Takeaway Folded Menu.

Simple takeaway menu is usually more prone to the younger customers, since they usually like to try something new out from the menu, while the older and longtime customer have already get used to their favorite menu. Hence, they are most unlikely to keeping a takeaway menu.

Dine-In Board Menu.

As for the menu to dine in restaurant, I use the simple board menu with 2 sides, back and front.

Showing simple title and description in bilingual (Bahasa and English).  Using photos could gain more interest to see how tasty the photo looked like.  Big size board (ca. A3) was used to portray the photos better. Font size also made to be bigger to add readability, addressing longtime customer request who have age' range about 40 y.o plus.

Business Card.

For their business card, I made it two sides but without the owner name, since what they want to promote is the restaurant itself. Therefore, on the back side, location map and address were included.

Other Branding Applications.

Other branding identity are applied to several tools that were used by owners. They are not necessarily making special merchandise like usual marketing tools, because again, this eatery spot is conventional and focus more on the taste and quality of the food. So big marketing approach are not their main goals. Hence, applications are made in clean and simple design.

Applications for

Online Use.

This branding project was also including the interface design process for online application. The objective was to facilitate the restaurant who also have the take-away or delivery services.

Hence, website design and mobile responsive one were provided so that customers, especially the younger generations, could easily search and browse for the menu they'd like to order.

Below is the interface design for 'Warung Kopi Gembira' homepage, contained a bit description about the restaurant, call-to-action button to menu and their categories. Location and contact was also included direct on the homepage, since it is important part for the client.
